One approach to caregiving and dementia care is the Best Friends Approach. It pulls on themes of person-centered care, especially emphasizing the relationship between the care-receiver and caregiver. This approach proposes that a best friend is vital for a person with dementia, since they provide social and emotional support, as well as empathy and security. According to Virginia Bell and David Troxel, there are seven tenants to the approach that involve acknowledging their rights as a person and empathizing with their diagnosis.
