As more and more individuals are diagnosed with some form of dementia, the importance of and need for advocacy becomes even clearer. It is because of dementia advocacy that there are resources available for the diagnosed and the caregivers, organizations seeking a cure for the various diseases of dementia, funds for individuals and carers who need financial support, and programs and support groups available for those who need them. Physiopedia published a page dedicated to how and why physiotherapists can and should advocate for people with dementia. It is very detailed, answering questions about advocacy, different dementias, treatment, discrimination and stigma, approaches to advocacy, and more. Even if one is not a physiotherapist, they can learn a lot from this information.
Spend time reading the page, Physiotherapists as Advocates for Individuals Living With Dementia.
