When dementia hits its later stages, caregivers must provide care 24/7, since the care-receiver becomes entirely dependent on their support. McCleary & colleagues (2018) recognized this, noting that the majority of people diagnosed with dementia in North America eventually spend their last years or months in care homes. As this is the case, the researchers found it important to examine the experience of care home staff and family members of those in homes. They discovered common themes of recognizing the humanity of the resident and knowing them, as well as being aware of the typically long decline and slow death characteristic of dementia. Having a grasp of these three concepts enabled person-centered care in the long-term homes. However, the researchers determined that staff needed better grief resources and support.
