Caregivers who have already journeyed through dementia with their loved ones have a good idea of what good hospice and end-of-life care looks like. Lewis (2014) recorded the stories of carers of people with dementia, specifically about their search for end-of-life care. The researcher found common themes that began with carers’ grief and feelings of hopelessness, followed by acceptance of care aimed at comfort rather than prolonging life, then feelings of disappointment with the hospice care, and finally relief after their loved ones’ passing. Knowing this research can better prepare caregivers for what to expect and what they will likely feel during the journey with dementia.
