When a person is diagnosed with some form of dementia, employment and financial security can be one of the unknowns in the process. Though some individuals cannot continue working due to the nature of their jobs and stage of their dementia, there are others who can stay at their place of employment for longer than one might think. The United Kingdom’s Alzheimer’s Society outlines ways one can determine how the law protects them in working with a dementia diagnosis, as well as how to address the topic with one’s boss. In another article, the American Academy of Neurology points out the challenge posited by an early-onset dementia diagnosis. It also points out different practical factors that play into the decision to keep working or not, including safety, novelty versus routine, level of responsibility, and stress-level.
